CHEERS (Cultural HEritagE. Risks and Securing activities) is a European project that focuses on safeguarding cultural heritage exposed to various environmental risks such as natural disasters, climate change, and so on.

INITIAL STATEMENT (WHY)  The Alps are a region where diverse tangible and intangible cultural heritage intertwines. This space represents the fundamental identity of its inhabitants and significantly contributes to the local economy. Natural disasters, which afflict the Alpine area and are likely to worsen in the future due to climate change, pose a threat to cultural heritage. Risk assessment, risk reduction, and disaster management have all focused on protecting people and infrastructure, while the safeguarding of cultural resources has not received adequate attention. The Cheers project addresses this gap.

GOAL (WHAT)  The project aims to enhance the protection of Alpine cultural resources and addresses neglected issues such as disaster management and damages caused by natural hazards.

CHEERS  will integrate expertise and experience in risk analysis, detailed consideration of cultural heritage preservation and assessment in action plans, support Alpine local communities in raising awareness and disseminating knowledge about the impact of natural risks on cultural heritage and offer possible solutions to reduce the vulnerability of cultural assets.

RESULTS (HOW)  Within the CHEERS project, national and transnational tools, national schemes, and guidelines for action to reduce the vulnerability of cultural assets will be developed.
