The Institution's Founding Purpose

The founding purpose of the Institution is to ensure the integrated and sustainable management of cultural heritage and natural values related to the Idrija mercury deposit in Idrija.

To fulfill its founding mission, the Institution primarily carries out the following activities:

  • The integrated, coordinated, and sustainable management of cultural heritage and natural values related to the Idrija mercury deposit in Idrija (hereinafter: Idrija mercury heritage);
  • Maintenance of the unflooded part of the mine and monitoring of the impact area of the Idrija mine;
  • Maintenance of key facilities and immovable mercury heritage in Idrija that are owned by the founder or other legal entities or natural persons, provided there are adequate legal grounds for such ownership;
  • Participation in the project for the nomination of Idrija mercury heritage for inclusion in UNESCO's World Heritage List and the performance of all related tasks;
  • Performance of research and related activities in connection with Idrija mercury heritage;
  • Planning, management, and implementation of development projects in the area of the Public Institute's registered activities;
  • Collaboration and cooperation with other managers of the Idrija Mercury Heritage;
  • Participation in the implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, in agreement with the competent authorities in the Republic of Slovenia and in collaboration with related international centers and the UNEP Secretariat;
  • Other tasks of similar content related to the founding mission of the Institution, with a focus on raising awareness, researching, and educating about the impacts of mercury, radon, and other consequences of past mining on human health and the environment, with the aim of improving the quality of life for the residents;


Scope of operation of the public Institution CUDHg Idrija

In 2016, CUDHg Idrija took over the maintenance work and monitoring from the Idrija Mercury Mine, a company in liquidation. On November 1, 2016, all employees from the Idrija Mine also became part of CUDHg Idrija.

Legal bases:

  • Government Decision No. 47803-51/2014/11 of July 24, 2014, which designates CUDHg Idrija as the new entity responsible for the continued maintenance of the unsealed part of the mine and the implementation of monitoring in the impact area of the Idrija mine, and Government Decision of March 16, 2016, confirming that the aforementioned decision remains unchanged;
  • The decision of the Ministry of Infrastructure No. 361-30/2011-DE-36 of November 28, 2014, on the termination of mining rights of RŽS Idrija and the transfer of maintenance of the unflooded part of the mine and monitoring of the impact area of the mine with associated surface facilities to CUDHg Idrija (in accordance with Article 150c of the Mining Act, ZRud-1-UPB3, Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 14/14, dated February 21, 2014);
  • Approval from the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology for the Internal Organization and Job Position System Act in the CUDHg public Institution and the Manpower Plan for CUDHg Idrija for the years 2016-2017 (No. 440-1/2016/65-MGRT, 0140-4/2016/157-MC dated August 30, 2016);

Through the Contract on the Transfer of Fixed Assets of Cultural Monuments of National Importance Idrija - Topilnica Rudnika živega srebra (EŠD 7460) for use and management, No. 3340-16-000005 dated May 13, 2016, the Contract on the Transfer of Fixed Assets of Cultural Monuments of National Importance Belčne Klavže, EŠD 12, Putrihove Klavže, EŠD 593, and Idrijske Klavže, EŠD 189 for use and management, No. 3340-16-000022 dated November 23, 2016, and the Contract on the Transfer of Facilities and Parcels and the Lease of Fixed Assets and Small Materials necessary for the maintenance of the unsealed part of the Idrija Mercury Mine and the implementation of monitoring in the impact area of the Idrija mine, concluded between RŽS Idrija, a company in liquidation, and CUDHg Idrija on November 2, 2016, CUDHg Idrija currently manages the following areas and cultural heritage sites of national importance inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List:

  • Hg Smelting Plant;
  • Belčne, Putrihove, and Idrijske Klavže;
  • Antonijev Rov Tourist Mine;
  • Frančiška Shaft area;
  • and Compressor Station;
