Anthony's Main Road and Hg Smelting Plant

Anthony's Main Road and Hg Smelting plant

Discover the mysterious world of mercury in Anthony's Main Road, the oldest preserved entrance to a mine in Europe, which was excavated in 1500. Today, visitors venture through Anthony's Main Road into the underground realm of the second-largest mercury mine in the world.

A guide will lead you through the underground world to hidden tunnels enriched with precious cinnabar ore and sparkling droplets of mercury. You will also visit a unique underground chapel. Come and explore 240 million years of geological history.

In the Hg Smelting Plant, through experiments, animations, videos, and devices based on Hg, you will learn about and experience the significance of this unique liquid metal that has shaped the world. Explore its versatile applications in science, technology, industry, medicine, culture, and everyday life, from prehistoric times to the present day.

In addition to the modern interactive exhibition, the Hg Smelting Plant boasts the world's largest rotary furnace for mercury extraction.
